Second language learning and teaching is subject to many myths and misconceptions, not only among lay people but among professionals as well. Second language learning theory has developed in the last several decades to offer a foundation for humane, effective and rational language teaching strategies. This conference invites participants to share their research or practice, based on any aspect of language teaching and learning, at any level, and including observations of the importance of first language literacy as well as bilingual education.
As with all events offered by The Sisu Advantage, this event is run in parallel with another conference. The intent is to break down traditional discipline silos and foster interdisciplinary collaboration. A California Connection:
In 2015 California is ranked 43rd among the 51 states (and D.C.) in “School System Quality” (https://wallethub.com/edu/states-with-the-best-schools/5335/). There are many plausible explanations, including measurement error, but one undeniable reality is that California schools disproportionately serve English Language Learners. A remarkable 44% of Californians speak a language other than English at home (http://www.catholic.org/news/national/story.php?id=57182), far more than any other state, and that percentage has increased 27% since 2000. More than 3 million students enrolled in Los Angeles Unified School District are ELLs, as are more than half a million in each of San Francisco, Riverside and San Diego. In LAUSD, 84% of ELLs speak Spanish.
Each conference weekend, a specialty workshop is offered that exposes attendees to open-source productivity tools that are freely available, such as "R Packages", that are specifically designed for teaching and research in the discipline(s) and topics that are the focus of that weekend.
The R Statistical Computing Environment is a free, downloadable software system for both basic and state-of-the-art data visualizations and analyses.
It is the leading programming language for newly introduced algorithms, and more than 7,000 “R Packages” are available for download to save you from needing to “reinvent the wheel” in your own work. We solicit requests from attending delegates and select one or two to present at each workshop. No prior experience with R or programming is expected.
